Carbon3D Named Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum

Redwood City, California, August 5, 2015 – Today, Carbon3D Inc., a Silicon Valley based 3D printing company working at the intersection of hardware, software and molecular science, was named one of the World Economic Forum’s Technology Pioneers. The award, as part of the World Economic Forum’s effort to enable rethinking and redesign of institutions and industries that have been around and unchanged for decades, recognizes transformative companies at the forefront of their industries. Carbon3D joins the Technology Pioneers program as the only additive manufacturing company to ever be selected.

Carbon3D recently introduced an innovative approach to polymer-based 3D printing that promises to advance the industry beyond basic prototyping to 3D manufacturing. The new Continuous Liquid Interface Production technology (CLIP) uses a tuneable photochemical process instead of the traditional mechanical approach, eliminating the shortcomings of conventional layer-by-layer 3D printing technology, to rapidly transform 3D models into final parts in a range of engineering-grade materials.

“We are honored to be selected as a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer and join the other innovative companies that have been a part of this program,” said Joseph DeSimone, CEO and Co-Founder of Carbon3D. “At Carbon3D, we are on a mission to transform how commercial-quality parts are designed and manufactured by addressing the fundamental limitations of today’s 3D printing technologies.”

Carbon3D was chosen by a professional jury among hundreds of candidates as one of the 49 selected companies. The Technology Pioneers were selected from among hundreds of applicants by a selection committee of 68 academics, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and corporate executives. A few notable members of the committee include Arianna Huffington (founder, Huffington Post) and Henry Blodget (editor-in-chief, Business Insider). The committee based its decisions on criteria including innovation, potential impact, working prototype, viability and leadership. Past recipients include Google (2001), Wikimedia (2007), Mozilla (2007), Kickstarter (2011) and Dropbox (2011).

“Carbon3D is part of a group of entrepreneurs who are more aware of the crucial challenges of the world around them, and who are determined to do their part to solve those challenges with their innovative technology,” says Fulvia Montresor, Head of Technology Pioneers at the World Economic Forum. “We hope this recognition can help drive further global awareness of Carbon3D and their activities across many different industries.”

About Carbon3D

Carbon3D, a Silicon Valley based company, was founded in 2013 in Chapel Hill, NC. Working at the intersection of hardware, software and molecular science, Carbon3D is delivering on the promise of 3D printing, allowing commercial customers to go beyond basic prototyping to achieve 3D manufacturing. The Continuous Liquid Interface Production technology (CLIP) was introduced simultaneously at TED 2015 and to the scientific community on the cover of Science Magazine (Science, March 2015). Carbon3D has received $41 million in funding through Series A and B financing rounds led by Sequoia Capital and Silver Lake Kraftwerk respectively. Most recently, Carbon3D also received a $10 million direct investment from Autodesk’s Spark Investment Fund. For more information please visit Carbon3D.com
