Introducing Carbon EPU 44

Today, June 14, 2022, we are excited to launch our latest material innovation that expands Carbon’s industry leading elastomer portfolio: EPU 44.

EPU 44 Gray featured in the adidas 4DFWD midsole.

EPU 44: A Stiffer, Highly Resilient, More Sustainable Elastomer, Proven in Production

EPU 44 is a resilient elastomer that is stiff, durable, and flexible. It is available in two colors: white and translucent gray. Below are some of EPU 44’s key features and elastomeric upgrades:

Improved Performance

EPU 44 enables lighter lattices than EPU 41 when designed with equivalent stiffness, usually requiring less material for similar application spaces.

Better Economics

EPU 44 prints faster than EPU 41. EPU 44’s higher green strength helps protect delicate designs, ultimately opening a broader design space for product designers and engineers.

More Sustainable

EPU 44 contains 40% biobased content.

Proven in Production

EPU 44 White and EPU 44 Gray are used in high-volume production today by adidas in the midsole of their 4DFWD shoes.

EPU 44 is commercialized as a General Factory product, requiring industrial-class dispensing, cleaning, and baking equipment.

Revamping Foam for Your Next Breakthrough Product

Many product designers who rely on foam are performance constrained by the linear compressibility of foam. Companies like adidas, Specialized, and Selle Royal are now breaking through that limitation by developing next-gen products focused on improving energy return via elastomeric lattices.

As product teams look for new applications of elastomeric lattices, they want to push in new directions, requiring different characteristics that were previously unattainable, all the while maintaining great functional properties, aesthetics, durability, and cost-effectiveness. EPU 44 enables them to achieve these benefits.

EPU 44 Application Areas

EPU 44 adds new ways to create highly differentiated products in:

  • Personalized compression
  • Highly breathable padding
  • Tuned lattice compressions instead of a single layer of foam
  • Single lattice with multiple zone compression instead of multiple densities of foam

EPU 44 is exclusive to the Carbon Digital Light Synthesis™ (Carbon DLS™) platform. Product development support as well as material and product samples are available now. Serial production is available in Taiwan, China, and Germany.
