Carbon Announces Expanded Access to Digital Manufacturing Platform at Formnext

Largest printer in the Carbon Digital Manufacturing Platform, the L1 printer, now available for order; Jabil to join the Carbon Production Network

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2019, 12AM PT/9AM GMT: Today at Formnext, the leading exhibition and conference dedicated to additive manufacturing in the world, Carbon is making two major announcements about its latest efforts to expand access to the Carbon Digital Manufacturing Platform globally. First, Carbon’s largest format printer, the L1 printer, is available to order. Leading companies such as adidas, Riddell, and Dentsply Sirona are already using the L1 printer to accelerate innovation and bring breakthrough products to market.

“The L1 printer has made history with the innovation it has enabled and the quality and production scale it has achieved,” said Dr. Joseph DeSimone, Co-Founder and CEO of Carbon. “It is an extremely efficient and capable machine, transformational for product designers and engineers looking to make what’s next, and rugged enough for production environments and versatile enough to produce a range of parts—from precise dental models to impact-absorbing helmet liners. Its most exciting days are still ahead of it. We can’t wait to see what our customers do with it!”

Additionally, one of the world’s largest manufacturing solutions providers, Jabil, will join the Carbon Production Network, further expanding access to the Carbon Platform. Healthcare applications leveraging the Carbon Digital Manufacturing Platform will be a central focus of the partnership.

Carbon L1 Printer Available to Order

The Carbon L1 printer is ideal for product designers, engineers, contract manufacturers, 3D printing labs, and Centers of Excellence to accelerate their product development process at every stage, from prototyping through validation and ultimately the production of millions of units. The build area of the L1 printer is approximately 1000cm2 providing new capabilities to fabricate bigger parts and also to manufacture many parts simultaneously, helping companies deliver innovative products and improve overall production efficiency. The Carbon family of production-ready materials, such as rigid polyurethane (RPU), elastomeric polyurethane (EPU), epoxy (EPX), and silicone (SIL) are compatible with the L1 printer.

Initially released earlier this year on a limited basis, the L1 printer is already behind numerous product innovations with the Carbon Digital Manufacturing Platform. Some of the world’s most iconic brands such as adidas, Riddell, and Specialized are actively scaling their production volumes using Carbon L1 printers.

“We think of adidas 4D as the future of our performance footwear, and with the L1 printer and Carbon’s Digital Manufacturing Platform, in just two years we’ve been able to go from a conceptual FutureCraft design to a running shoe that has revolutionized the footwear industry,” said Marco Kormann, Director of Future Technology Innovation at adidas.

In dental, the L1 printer is central to the L1 Production Solution, a solution designed to optimize workflow for the large-scale production of clear aligners. The L1 printer allows dental laboratories to produce thousands of high-quality clear aligners per day, an enormous boon to the industry. With an unprecedented Net Promoter Score of 89 as published by NADL, Carbon’s dental customers have expressed superior satisfaction with its technology and service. Current customers and partners include Derby Dental, Affordable Care, and SureSmile—the clear aligner business of Dentsply Sirona, the world’s largest manufacturer of professional dental products and technologies.

“Together, Carbon and SureSmile are transforming the clear aligner market with personalized, high-quality orthodontic products,” said Dominique Mondou, VP and General Manager for Dentsply Sirona. “Carbon’s Digital Light Synthesis technology is making it possible to manufacture aligners with incredible fit and function at speeds and volumes that aren’t possible with other manufacturing methods.”

Jabil Joins Carbon Production Network

Carbon works with an elite ecosystem of industry-leading contract manufacturers around the world to enable access to our Carbon Digital Light Synthesis™ (DLS™) technology and Digital Manufacturing Platform. Now, Carbon is thrilled to announce that Jabil, one of the world’s leading manufacturing solutions providers, will be joining the Carbon Production Network.

“We are excited to become a valued member of the Carbon Production Network,” said John Dulchinos, VP of Digital Manufacturing, Jabil. “This will further strengthen our ability to drive adoption of additive manufacturing across an integrated ecosystem of printers, materials, and processes tailored for the growing application demands of heavily regulated industries, including healthcare.”

Over the past year, in addition to Jabil, Carbon has added over ten partners to the network, providing OEMs and suppliers with a validated ecosystem of contract manufacturers certified on the Carbon Digital Manufacturing Platform.
